Record review: Fatalists – ‘The Old Hag’ [Gamma Proforma]

artworks-000062479928-kjyo86-t500x500Fatalists’ single, from their newly released debut album ‘Between the Aisles’, is a lurching waltz-time piece of post-punk, a danse macabre of interlocking angular guitar and bass riffs, hard hitting drums and gurning snarling vocals.

The biggest strand of influences seems to come from the 80s and 90s American underground, with similarities to the smart songwriting of Fugazi (listen to ‘The Old Hag’ alongside ‘Cashout’ to hear exactly what I mean) a bit of ‘Bakesale’ era Sebadoh, and of course the spiky noise-rock of Shellac and Jesus Lizard.

This is a fine sign of things to come, and will no doubt leave plenty of folk exited to hear the rest of the new album.
