Record review: Hagana – ‘Fuzzy Punch’

a2427910711_10Named after a Jewish paramilitary organisation, Hagana are an alt-rock/grunge trio from Edinburgh.

Their current line-up of Leo Fox (Guitar/Vocals), David Chisholm (Drums/Vocals) and Gary Pycroft (Bass) has been together since 2011, touring Canada and supporting US alt-metallers Filter.

Aping late-eighties, early-nineties American indie-rock they liberally apply a layer of fuzz to their crunchy power chords but with a greater focus on the Sugar/Bob Mould-like melody than the stoned wordplay of Pavement.

Though they claim that “pop is not a dirty word”, the trio are still a little way from radio ready, but with tight percussion and catchy riffs they’re well on the way to being one of the capital’s most effective rock bands and ‘Fuzzy Punch’s liberal hooks should help them on their way.
