Record review: Deathbells – ‘Money Making Sequel/Glow’

602932_248139642000612_1249455673_nDeathbells is a young Glaswegian band out to cause chaos with their smashing new single ‘Money Making Sequel / Glow’

With its ominous bass rolls early shout of “God is feeble” ‘Money Making Sequel’ brings to mind Smashing Pumpkins’ ‘Zero’, but the guitar playing is more reminiscent of a fuzzier version of Johnny Marr duking it out with Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis.

Like another young Scottish band Watchfires, Deathbells have a gritty glamour and appealingly raw vocals reminiscent of a celtic Caleb Followill.

‘Glow’s sparkling opening riff collapses away leaving their singer to ponder “where did you go?’, Perhaps the lyrics aren’t quite as sharp as they are on the flipside but the quiet-loud dynamics and hefty percussion lend some weight to its explosive finale.

With two strong tracks recorded already and a successful King Tut’s show, alongside the likes of Holy Pistol Club, Deathbells are off to an auspicious start.

Watch out for them.
