Record review: Baby Strange – Friend [Chess Club]

19565--437796b00c60affa8746f9fcb455baccThe Glaswegian tykes whose debut release ‘Pure Evil’ was one of the most brilliant tracks released in the first half of this year return with another stunner in the form of new single ‘Friend’.

Already making waves over at NME, ‘Friend’ is a ragged guitar blowout to get amps crackling and feet tapping.

With its lyrics about stolen keys and unfaithful friends the subject matter could be bleak and bitter but it’s the way they capture a freewheeling night on the town that really marks Baby Strange out as something special.

If your favourite Arctic Monkeys song is ‘From the Ritz to the Rubble’ there’s a good chance you’ll fall in love with these guys.

With the energy of doomed punks The Exploding Hearts and pounding drums that threaten to fall part any second yet just about hold together for an all-too-brief two minutes they could just be the most exciting young band in Britain.
